When Percy arrived at our rescue centre after being abandoned, it was obvious that he hadn’t been looked after for a long time. He was pitifully thin and in a lot of pain. You would expect a dog suffering like this to be scared, aggressive even. But it was as if Percy knew ISPCA Animal Inspector Fiona Conlon was there to help, as he let her lead him away to safety.
Percy weighing in well below par
Percy was severely underweight with bare patches all over his body that were raw red and inflamed. After he’d been given some pain relief, his skin was treated and he was thoroughly examined. Later, when his blood tests came back, they confirmed the very worst. Percy also had a type of cancer called lymphoma and needed urgent treatment to save his life.
His skin was raw and inflamed
Percy was given intravenous chemotherapy weekly and oral chemotherapy every other day. With his already weakened condition, it was touch and go for those first few weeks as he underwent intensive and gruelling treatment. Percy had to be kept isolated as his medications were toxic to other animals. A special run was built alongside the other dogs to give him some company. His medical treatments and specialised care were expensive, but after such a cruel start, Percy deserved a chance to live.
At the Vets for his last round of chemo
Throughout many rounds of treatment and months of isolation, this gentle dog has shown only love and affection for everyone he meets.
Thankfully, all the signs are positive for a full recovery. Soon he will be ready to be adopted and find his forever home. His hair has grown back and he now looks the picture of health – in fact, he’s become a real head turner. His carers will be a little bit heartbroken when the time comes to say goodbye. But you know that they will be tears of joy to see this gentle, lovable dog happy at last in a new home.
A happy Percy after chemo
