Friday holds a special place in everyone’s hearts at the ISPCA, as it’s the day when we get to share heartwarming tales of dog adoptions, showcasing the remarkable outcomes of our rescue initiatives.
Today’s Happy Tail is from Zita, who adopted Mikey, who was with us for 3 months in ISPCA care in ISPCA Wicklow.
Here is how Mikey is getting on at his new home:
“When we met Mikey first, he was in Sharpeshill in ISPCA Wicklow, and we were looking for a completely different dog. Mikey had just arrived and was bald, had scratches all over him and had the saddest eyes ever.”
“But Benji, my other dog, just took to him like duck to water and there was a bond forged between them instantly. So when we went down to see him a couple of weeks later, his hair had started growing back and he was just the most gentle soul, but because he hadn’t been exercised that much, he was quite stiff on his legs and wouldn’t do anything more than walking and trotting. So he stayed at ISPCA Wicklow and we got him at the end of September. When he came to the house and from the second his paw landed with a thud on the back garden, he was in just great form.”
“Now, he was in a slight state of anxiety for the first 24-48 hours, and wasn’t used to strange surroundings. But within a week, he was a different dog. Now, he has a mouth as big as anything and when he goes fetching balls, the balls seem to just disappear into his cheek pockets! And he is not a fair player when it comes to chasing balls, and he has very only-child syndrome! But now he has zoomies every day when he goes out and he’s getting fit and he’s learned how to swim.”
“He never knew what water was before and he was absolutely terrified of it the first time he brought him out. And now because of our other dog Benji who’s kind of acting like a big brother to him, he goes everywhere where Benji goes. And Benji loves swimming, so we bring them down swimming most days. He absolutely loves it. He’s so affectionate with other dogs, there’s no aggression in him whatsoever and he is an extremely grounded dog.”
“Now, as for walking, once you put the lead on him, he takes you for a walk! So we’re going to have to go to behavioral classes to get that in check. But if he was a human being, he would be the kindest, most loving human being ever. Just a dog full of energy and while he may not be conventionally cute, we think he’s gorgeous and I’m so glad he’s come into our lives and he has put manners on my other dog and he has brought so much love and joy to the household.”
“Now, if I could only stop him peeing in my kitchen, we’d be doing great” But that will come with time. But he is an absolutely wonderful dog, we’re very lucky to have him.”
We would like to thank Zita for sending us this lovely update on how Mikey is getting on at his forever home.
