Kim's harrowing start in life

Trapped, alone to thriving with the best care.

This is Kim.

When we found Kim she was trapped in a sealed 4ft x 3ft wooden box with no light or water, her coat was dull and greasy. Her nails were overgrown. Her shoulder was scarred from a previous fight. We saw that she was terrified. And heavily pregnant.

She was being held in this lightless prison and forced to breed so that her puppies could be sold for profit. During the Covid-19 pandemic, when the market for dogs exploded, each of her puppies could have sold for €500 or more.

While across the country, dogs that were kept for breeding are now seen as disposable and are abandoned or locked away in dark boxes. Many are cruelly left to starve without adequate food or water.

Who knows how long this poor terrified dog was forced to sit confined in complete darkness. Two weeks after our Kim was rescued, she gave birth to sixteen puppies. Sadly, three did not make it.

In the yard where she was found our Animal Welfare Inspectors also discovered another twelve cats and fourteen dogs, including four puppies who were just four weeks old and locked in a box. We were able to seize all of those animals and bring them to an ISPCA Rescue Centre where we could give them the care they needed.

Kim has since been in the care of our dedicated and expert animal carers since the day she was seized from that cramped and dark prison.

And thanks to the love and support of wonderful people like you, Kim is now thriving. Kim is such an affectionate and loving dog, it is hard to believe that anyone could ever have treated her so brutally.

We are so grateful that the thirteen pups are now safe in the care of dog-loving families.

But the tragedy is that, right now, there are thousands of other dogs who are living through the same hell as Kim did. And it’s happening in every single county in Ireland.

Will you give us the help we need to make sure every animal is given the love and care they deserve?
