The ISPCA is delighted to announce the launch of our Christmas campaign, aimed at raising crucial funds for the charity and spreading a vital message about responsible pet ownership. At the forefront of this heartwarming initiative is the esteemed former RTÉ journalist, Charlie Bird.
For years, Charlie has been a household name, known for his journalistic expertise. However, his journey took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. Undeterred, Charlie found solace and joy in the companionship of a four-legged friend – Tiger, a furry companion he adopted a couple of years ago.
In a remarkable twist of fate, Charlie, who was once afraid of dogs, now finds himself inseparable from Tiger. Their bond is a testament to the transformative power of the human-animal connection, proving that love knows no boundaries.
This Christmas, Charlie is determined to extend the hand of friendship through his charity work with the ISPCA. He passionately advocates for responsible pet ownership, emphasising that a pet is not just for Christmas but for life. Charlie’s personal journey serves as a poignant reminder that the joy of having a pet is immeasurable and enduring.
In a powerful testament to his commitment to animal welfare, Charlie recently participated in an emotional advertising campaign for the ISPCA, where he travelled to the organisation’s Wicklow Centre and spent time in one of the kennels for the shoot.
With a profound understanding of the challenges faced by abandoned pets, Charlie passionately emphasised the urgent need for public support through donations. During the shoot, he drew attention to the critical situation faced by the ISPCA, with their Centres currently at full capacity.
Charlie urged the public to contribute generously, emphasising the necessity to secure external kennels to provide a safe haven for the increasing number of abandoned animals. He resonantly invoked the campaign’s rallying cry, using the phrase ‘Stop the Pain,’ which is the poignant title of the ISPCA’s emergency national fundraising appeal launched earlier this year. Charlie’s unwavering dedication to alleviating the suffering of animals serves as a poignant call to action for all to join the ISPCA in their vital mission.
Reflecting on the campaign, Charlie Bird expressed, “In embracing Tiger into my life, I’ve learned the true meaning of friendship and unconditional love. I’m proud to support the ISPCA’s Christmas campaign, as we encourage everyone to consider the responsibility that comes with pet ownership. Let’s remember, a pet is not just for Christmas, but for life. Together, let’s extend the hand of friendship to our furry friends.”
Dr. Cyril Sullivan, CEO of the ISPCA, stated, “We are grateful to have Charlie Bird’s support for our Christmas campaign. His personal story resonates deeply with the values we uphold at the ISPCA. We hope this campaign not only raises vital funds for our organisation but also sparks conversations about the lifelong commitment that comes with bringing a pet into your home.”
