The Dept of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) has issued a reminder to the public about the importance of microchipping your dog.

Microchipping is widely acknowledged as the best method to ensure permanent identification of your cherished pet. The microchip, roughly the size of a grain of rice, is placed under your pet’s skin. It holds a unique number that can be detected by an electronic scanner. This number is linked to your contact details stored in a database.

Microchipping is mandatory for all dogs by law, and failing to adhere to this could lead to a fine of up to €5,000. It’s illegal to sell, supply, or buy a dog without a microchip. Additionally, microchipping is recommended for other pets like cats. If you have any inquiries about microchipping, feel free to reach out to your local veterinarian.

Benefits of Microchipping Your Dog:

  1. 1. Increased Chance of Reunion: If your pet goes missing, microchipping enhances the likelihood of them being returned to you.
  2. Tamper-Resistant ID: Unlike collars and tags that can be removed or altered, microchips are tiny and inserted under the skin, making it challenging to locate. Also, the microchip ID cannot be altered, unlike physical tags.
  3. Painless Procedure: Microchipping is quick and painless, typically done without anesthesia. The chip is inserted between the shoulder blades, causing no discomfort to your dog.
  4. Secure Personal Information: Only a unique reference number is stored on the microchip, linked to a secured database. Authorized parties like veterinary offices and animal shelters can access this information.

Maintenance Tips for Your Dog’s Microchip:

  • Ensure the microchip is registered after insertion.
  • Have your veterinarian scan the microchip annually to confirm its functionality.
  • Update your microchip registration promptly if you move house or if any personal information changes.
