In 2019, Inspector Deirdre Scally rescued Benji from Laois. He was found left in a field with serious leg injuries. It was clear that he had been on a trap and had fallen on hard ground and was left in a field with his untreated wounds.
Benji was brought straight to the National Animal centre where he received expert veterinary treatment. He had numerous visits to the vet as his wounds were swollen and infected. He was also very lame and sore on his feet and the vet thought he may never be sound again. But after a year of care and treatment, his wounds fully healed and he became completely sound and was ready for a new home.
He was rehomed in January 2021 and is now loved so much by his new owner Nicole. She sent us on this lovely update about him:
“He is now a super riding horse, jumping, dressage, cross country and loves a swim in the beach sea. Loving his life. He’s now six years old, with loads of cheeky personality. He’s basically a giant dog, he is spoilt rotten and he knows it. He is super sweet and affectionate and will do anything to please. For such a young horse he has taken everything that I have thrown at him in his stride and never fails to please. He’s a dream horse to deal with and makes everyone on my yard laugh at the stuff he does be up to!
If I put him in the horse walker with other horses he will stop the horse walker with his bum and hold it stopped so he and all the other horses have a nice relaxing time standing still instead of walking around! He’s just a big playful fella!”
