Following the latest weather alert issued by Met Eireann, the ISPCA is asking pet owners to ensure that their animals are kept safely indoors during the storm.
Gale to storm force winds are expected in some parts of the country as well as heavy rain. With this in mind, animals can be easily distressed and should be kept inside.
Check out our 5 Tips to Keep Your Pet Safe in Stormy Weather:
Create a Safe Shelter: Set up a cosy and secure spot indoors where your pet can take refuge during storms. This can be a designated room with comfortable bedding and familiar toys. Make it a quiet place away from windows to minimise the noise from any thunder or windows rattling from strong gale force winds. Cats in particular often take shelter under the bonnet of a car, so make sure to bring them in and always check for sleeping cats before you drive off. If you have rabbits that are kept outside, please bring them in as their shelters could be damaged and they could escape. Larger animals including horses and farm animals should be brought inside in a secure stable or shed, so that they are shielded from heavy rain and flooding, and kept safely away from falling trees and flying debris.
Keep Identification Updated: Ensure your pet has proper identification, like a collar with an ID tag and a microchip. Storms can be disorienting, and in case your pet gets scared and wanders off, having updated identification increases the chances of a safe return.
Stay Calm and Comfort Your Pet: Pets often look to their owners for reassurance during storms. Stay calm and provide comfort by petting them or speaking to them in a soothing voice. Reassure them that everything is okay, and the storm will pass.
Prepare an Emergency Kit: Assemble a pet emergency kit containing essentials like food, water, medications, and any comfort items. Keep this kit easily accessible so that you can quickly grab incase of emergencies. It’s also a good idea to include a recent photo of your pet in case you get separated.
Limit Outdoor Exposure: Keep your pet indoors during stormy weather to avoid potential dangers like lightning, strong winds, or debris. If your pet needs to go outside, make it brief and ensure they are on a leash or in a secure enclosure. Avoid walks until the storm has passed. Ensure stables are well grounded inside and have lightning rods when keeping equines inside.
Remember, every pet is unique, so observe your furry friend’s behaviour and adjust these tips based on their specific needs. By taking these precautions, you can help keep your pet safe and comfortable during stormy weather.
